Trinity School

Croydon

Theatretech worked with the School to develop a scheme to convert an existing large Assembly Hall with a raised stage and small proscenium opening into a focused ‘Concert Hall’.

Trinity School has a reputation for excellence in music and a renowned Boy’s Choir. The music department has recently completed a new music school with 17 individual sound-proofed practice rooms, and a Recital Hall, the project having been designed and project managed by Theatretech, but the Concert Hall is the main all-school facility.

The Hall had to retain its ability to hold national examinations, school assemblies and a range of other functions that retained the flat floor, so a new double row retractable seating unit moves forward from under the retained seating gallery and deploys the length of the Hall, seating 450 persons. Acoustic reflector canopies are fixed to the central ceiling area in a slight arc to get the sound generated from the flexible stage to the rear of the Hall, with the aid of a mobile acoustic shell which can be deployed behind the performers on stage. The proscenium line has been brought forward with new side entrances, and the stage extended into the auditorium.

The School is particularly proud of the acoustics of the space, and the Concert Hall has an enviable reputation with school and outside professional musicians alike.
